Egg series wide open
8 April 2014
The box draw for the Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg semi-finals has ensured that the series will remain wide open heading in to Saturday night’s (April 12) program.
Victorian trainer, Darren McDonald will look to take one step closer to securing his third Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg title, with Where’s The Surf securing box one in the opening qualifier. The favourable rails draw should see Where’s The Surf hold a good position at the first turn and allow a late challenge. McDonald’s Perth Cup winner, Keybow also features in the first semi-final, drawing box seven, to the outside of renowned pacey starter, Pride Of Mykonos.
The second semi-final features a host of outstanding runners, including heat winners Warrior King and Dyna Nalin. Multiple Group 1 winner, Dyna Nalin, will however need to rectify tardy box manners shown in last weeks heats if he is to be close enough to challenge early leaders. One of those likely leaders is Evil Punk, which has suffered a horror run in the past month. An extremely open affair, the second run off shapes as the race of the night.
Australian Cup winner, Buckle Up Wes was impressive in his 29.56 victory last Saturday, recording an all the way victory over strong company including Musquin Bale and Tonk. Drawn in box four for this weekend’s event, the Tasmanian runner won’t be worried by the middle draw and looks the clear winner. Mark Gatt’s Ritza Hattie has her chance to step up to the plate, after drawing box one, and is one of many NSW runners in the semi which could offer a local hope in the $250,000 to the winner final, if they were to get through.
In the final run off, speedster Iona Tokyo is drawn to lead and win. After leading all the way in her heat, the litter sister of Paws of Thunder winner, Iona Seven, will be looking to score her own Group 1 title and continue the roller coaster ride for trainer Frank Sidrak and his family. A tough event, Dark Warrior (box three) was a gutsy win in the final heat last Saturday and gives trainer Darren McDonald the opportunity to increase his chances at that third title. All of 2013 Golden Easter Egg winning trainer, Andrea Dailly’s runners (Easton Bale, Hawk Alone and Dyna Beth), drawn boxes six to eight, also remain in contention, with Dailly to start a total seven runners across the sermis.
