Brad Hill Billy has recorded his first NSW Group victory, after winning the Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint at Wentworth Park on Saturday night (September 26).
The son of Kinloch Brae x Break Even, joined the kennels of Raymond and Maree Smith of Forbes in May, and has since posted some impressive group race qualifying performances. Most notably of which, a second behind Smart Missile in the heat of the Group 2 Black Top in August, where Brad Hill Billy also broke the former track record.
Jumping from box two in the Bob Payne Final, Brad Hill Billy was only fairly away, but after railing well through the first turn to get into fourth position mid race. The former Tasmanian sprinter, proved too strong in the end, finishing well over Paua To Roar and Ritza Rossi.
Pocketing $40,000 for the win, trainer Raymond Smith said it had been a real privilege to train Brad Hilly Billy.
"He makes the drive a bit easier," Smith joked.
"He (Brad Hill Billy) seems to be getting stronger, early on he was known for getting out and going but last couple of runs have been really good," Smith said.
In a good day out for the Smith family, Dandy Jack took out the feature race at Cowra earlier in the day.
Wentworth Park will host the heats of the Group 3 Sydney Cup (720m) next Saturday (October 3), before then turning to the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic series on October 17.
